1997–98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup in 1997/98 was the 38th playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 47 club teams participated, including 32 domestic cup winners and 15 losing Cup Finalists (Betis Sevilla, FC Luzern, Levski -1913 Sofia, FC Dinamo Batumi, NK Zagreb, FC Dinaburg, U.S. Luxembourg, Hibernians Paola, HB Tórshavn, FK Sloga Jugomagnat Skopje, FC National Bucharest, NK Primorje, Budapest VSC, ÍB Vestmannaeyja and Cwmbran Town). The Defender and Spanish champions FC Barcelona had also become vice-champion of Spain and had been so qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Therefore Cup finalist Betis Sevilla went to. For Albania was not a representative of the season at the start.

From Germany were DFB-Pokal winner VfB Stuttgart, from Austria ÖFB Cup Winner SK Sturm Graz, Switzerland Cupfinalist FC Luzern and from Liechtenstein Cup winners FC Balzers at the start.

The finale in Råsundastadion of Solna (near Stockholm ) won Chelsea 1-0 against VfB Stuttgart. Chelsea won so after 1971 his second title in this competition.

Mode

The participants played as usual in pure Cup mode with return games the winner. Was there after two games Torgleichstand, the number of away goals scored decided ( away goals ). Was also equal in number to an extension took place in the return game in which was also the away goals rule. Ruled by the end of the extension is still a tie, a penalty shoot-out was performed.
