1997–98 WPHL season
The 1997/98 season was the second regular season of the Western Professional Hockey League. The twelve regular WPHL teams completed in the regular season per 69 encounters, while the HC Traktor Chelyabinsk as the visiting team completed a game from the Russian Super League against each of the other teams. The point of best team in the regular season were the Fort Worth Brahmas, while the El Paso Buzzards for the second time won the President's Cup in the play- offs.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Russian hockey club HC Traktor Chelyabinsk was a guest team participated in the WPHL and played a total of twelve season games.
- The Fort Worth Brahmas were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Lake Charles Ice Pirates were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Monroe Moccasins were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Odessa Jackalopes were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The San Angelo Outlaws were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Shreveport Mudbugs were added as an expansion team in the league.
