1997 ABC Championship
The basketball Asia Championship 1997 ( officially: FIBA Asia Championship 1997) was the 19th edition of this tournament and took place from 11th to 19th September in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It was organized by FIBA Asia, the Asian Basketball Federation. The top two teams qualified for the World Basketball Championship in 1998.

According to the rules of FIBA Asia were allowed in the tournament alongside host Saudi Arabia attend the five top-ranked basketball Asia Championship 1995, as well as from each Regional Association of two other teams, except for East Asia, where there already five participants were qualified for the tournament. A total of 15 teams participated in the tournament.

Preliminary round
The first round was carried out in three groups of four teams and one group with three teams. The winner of the match was awarded two points, the loser one point. The top two of each group played in groups E and F for the places 1-8. The third - and fourth-placed played in the groups G and H for places 9-15.
