1997 FIFA World Youth Championship

The 11th FIFA World Cup ( officially: 9th World Youth Championship for the FIFA / Coca -Cola Cup) was held in Malaysia from 16 June to 5 July 1997. The number of participating teams was increased to this tournament from 16 to 24, with two more preliminary groups and with the second round another knockout round were introduced.

Defending champion Argentina was able to repeat his success with a 2-1 final victory over Uruguay and moved to coincide with the third title with the former world champion Brazil. To the best player of the tournament the Uruguayan Nicolás Olivera was chosen scorer of the Brazilian Adaílton with ten goals.
