1997 Super 12 season

The 1997 season was the second edition of Super 12, a rugby union competition with eight franchise teams from Australia and New Zealand and four provincial teams from South Africa.

Due to an internal regulation of the South African Rugby Union ( SARU ) replaced the provincial team Free State of South Africa, the South African team Province Western Province, which was the schlechtplatzierteste South African team last year.

A total of 69 matches were played, each team round-robin against the other eleven teams fought out. It was followed by two semi-finals and eventually the finals. Masters were for the second time the Blues from the New Zealand city of Auckland.

This year there have been some innovations in the rules of the sport also due to the professionalisation of rugby union. So it was in this edition of Super 12 to several world premieres. There yellow and red cards, a ten-minute half-time break and tactical training and substitutions were introduced.
