1997 Veikkausliiga

The First Division in 1997 was the eighth season of the First Division, the highest Finnish league for football the men.

Ten teams played for the Finnish championship. On the play it was in a triple round, so each team came up with 27 games. HJK Helsinki, the year before could barely survive in the relegation against relegation, won with a commanding lead of ten points before the championship Vaasa PS. Holders FC Jazz Pori was only seventh.

In the final, the Finnish Football Cup was won by FC Haka from Valkeakoski 2-1 after extra time with TPS Turku. Turku had already been in the preseason in the final and was in the penalty shootout HJK Helsinki just inferior. The Cup final in Helsinki Olympic Stadium on October 25, followed around 4100 spectators.
