Defending champion Richard Krajicek was. The final disputed Pete Sampras and Cédric Pioline, which won Sampras in straight sets. This was his fourth triumph at the Wimbledon Championships ( after 1993, 1994 and 1995) and his tenth overall Grand Slam title.
