1997 Women's European Volleyball Championship

The European Women's Volleyball in 1997 took place from 27 September to 5 October in Brno instead. Russia won the title for the 15th time.

Mode

The twelve participants were divided into the first round in two groups of six. The group winners and runners reached the semi-finals. The Third and Fourth played to the ranks of five to eight.

Qualification

The Czech Republic was set as host. The four best teams in the European championship in 1995 were also automatically qualified. These were the Netherlands as the defending champion, the Second Croatia, the third Russian and Fourth Germany.

Nineteen other teams played for seven other places in the finals. In the first qualifying round, the teams were divided into two triples and three groups of four and each played home and away against each opponent. The group winners were directly qualified. The runners- determined together with hosts Slovakia in Nitra two other participants. The four best teams in the group of six played the semi-finals and the finalists reached the finals.
