1998–99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup in 1998/99 was the 39th and last at the same time playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 49 club teams from 48 countries took part, including defending champions Chelsea, 34 domestic cup winners and 14 losing Cup Finalists (Newcastle United, FK Qarabağ Aghdam, MSV Duisburg, FC Copenhagen, FC Lantana Tallinn, SC Heerenveen, NK Varteks Varaždin, Liepaja Metalurgs, Constructorul Chisinau RDC Mallorca, Sporting Braga, Lokomotiv Moscow, CSKA Kiev and Apollon Limassol).

From Germany were DFB Cup finalists MSV Duisburg, Austria from OFB - Winners' Cup SV Ried, Switzerland Lausanne-Sports Cup winners and cup winners FC Vaduz in Liechtenstein at the start.

The final at Villa Park in Birmingham Lazio won 2-1 against Real Mallorca.

Mode

The participants played as usual in pure Cup mode with return games the winner. Was there after two games Torgleichstand, the number of away goals scored decided ( away goals ). Was also equal in number to an extension took place in the return game in which was also the away goals rule. Ruled by the end of the extension is still a tie, a penalty shoot-out was performed. The final was decided on one game at a neutral venue. If the score is level after extra time the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shootout.
