1998 African Championships in Athletics

The 11th European Athletics Championships took Africa from 18 to 22 August 1998 Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium in the Senegalese capital Dakar instead.

Decisions were made in 22 disciplines for men and 20 for women disciplines. For women, there were no contests in the 3000 -meter steeplechase and pole vault, for the first time in the hammer throw. Compared to the previous Africa Championships 10,000 - meter race in men and women by a 3000 - meter race has been replaced.

It was attended by 395 athletes from 39 countries participate. Three of them succeeded in Dakar title defense in their discipline: Seun Ogunkoya (NGR, 100 -meter run ), Hatem Ghoula ( DO, 20 km walking), Glory Alozie (NGR, 100 - meter hurdles ). Moreover, won in the 4 x 400 - meter relay with Nigeria and Senegal in the women with the men the same countries as the last African Championship.
