1998 African Women's Championship

The African Cup of Women 1998 (English: African Women Championship, French: Championnat d' Afrique de football féminin ) was the third playout of the African Continental Championships in women's football and was held from 17 to 30 October in Nigeria instead. For the first time a Final tournament was held in a host country. Venues were Abeokuta and Kaduna. However, because of the withdrawal of Mozambique ultimately participated in only 7 of the 8 teams qualified.

Hosts Nigeria used its home court advantage and became the third consecutive time African champions and qualified along with Ghana finalist for the Football World Cup of 1999 women in the United States.

Mode

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four. Within the preliminary groups, each team plays once against each other. The group winners and the best runners-up spot to reach the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reach the finals, the semi-final losers play for third place.

Qualification

In a knockout round with round-trip game, the finalists were determined. Hosts and defending champions Nigeria was automatically qualified for the finals.
