1998 Super 12 season
This season, the South African Rugby Union ( SARU ) solid Super 12 franchises also resulted in a place the previous provincial teams. These were the Coastal Sharks, Golden Cats, Northern Bulls and Western Stormers. So now there was between the South African teams no longer relegation.
A total of 69 matches were played, each team round-robin against the other eleven teams fought out. It was followed by two semi-finals and eventually the finals. Masters were for the first time the Crusaders from the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

The points are distributed as follows:
- 4 points for a win
- 2 points for a draw
- 0 points for a loss (before possible bonus points )
- 1 bonus point for four or more attempts, regardless of the Final
- 1 bonus point for a loss by fewer than seven points difference
