1998 Veikkausliiga

The First Division in 1998 was the ninth season of the First Division, the highest Finnish league for football the men.

Ten teams played for the Finnish championship. It was played in a Drefachrunde which each team had to deny 27 games. The FC Haka from Valkeakoski itself brought the championship. Had the climbers from the second division and reigning Cup winner after the last matchday three points clear of Vaasa PS, who won the vice-championship for the second time in a row. After 1960, 1962, 1965, 1977 and 1995 it was the sixth Finnish championship for the team from Pirkanmaa.

Since the First Division should be again discharged with twelve teams in 1999, there were three climbers from the Ykkönen and a team that met in the relegation to second-bottom of the First Division. The First Division - Last dismounted directly.

In the final, the Finnish Football Cup last year's champion HJK Helsinki won 3-2 over city rivals PK -35 Helsinki. In the Helsinki Olympic Stadium saw around 5,000 spectators this game.

HJK Helsinki could also decide the Finnish League Cup for themselves. Against FF Jaro it was off to a 1-1 after regulation time and extra time to penalties. In this HJK had 7:6 in the lead and won the fifth finals for the fourth time Ligacup.

Since TPV Tampere away one more goal scored as FinnPa Helsinki, FinnPa rose in the Ykkönen from and TPV Tampere on in the First Division. Direct ascended were previously the FC Lahti, FC Inter Turku and Kotka KTP.
