1999–2000 UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League 1999/2000 was the eighth season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 45th overall.

It took a record number of 71 teams from 47 state associations in the competition, with the countries that in the squares 1-3 UEFA five year ranking four, in the squares 4-6 three and send the squares 7-15 two teams were allowed.

The final took place on 24 May 2000 at the Stade de France in Saint- Denis near Paris and was won by Real Madrid 3-0 against Valencia. It was the eighth title for the Spanish record champion and record holder the Champions League.

Mode

This year there have been some changes in both the qualifying and in the group stage. The number of qualifying rounds increased due to the increased number of participants over the previous year to three. These were qualified from the countries in the squares 1-3 UEFA five year ranking ( Germany, Italy and Spain), two teams in the group stage, two started in the 3rd qualifying round. From England, France and the Netherlands (seats 4-6), two teams were also set for the group stage and one team competed in the third qualifying round. For Greece, the Czech Republic and Portugal ( places 7-9), a team in the group stage were each set and one team competed in the third qualifying round. The second team of Norway (No. 10) started in the second qualifying round. Denmark, Croatia, Austria, Russia and Turkey ( places 11-15) sent one team each in the 2nd and one team in the third qualifying round.

The group stage was divided into two sections. In the first group stage á 4 teams was played in 8 groups. The respective First and Second in each group qualified for the second group stage. The third in each group were in the UEFA Cup 1999/2000 continue playing. In the second group stage á 4 teams was played in 4 groups. Qualification

First qualifying round

The first legs were held on 13 ( vs. Barry. Valetta ) and 14, the return legs on 21 July 1999.

Second qualifying round

The first legs took place on 4 August 1999 on 28 July, the return games.

Third qualifying round

The first leg was held on 10 (Lyon vs. Maribor) takes and 11, the return legs on 25 August 1999. The winner of the third qualifying round reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, the defeated teams reached the first round of the UEFA Cup.

For the first time in the history of the competition in the final two teams met each other from a country.
