The 7th IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships were held from 5 to 7 March 1999 in the Japanese city of Maebashi instead. The competitions were held in the Green Dome.
There were two new Weltkrekorde:
- The U.S. 4x400 - meter relay of the men needed 3:02,83 min.
- The Russian 4x400 - meter relay team of women reached a time of 3:24-25 min.
