1999 NHL Expansion Draft

The NHL Expansion Draft 1999 took place on 25 June 1999 in Boston, Massachusetts, instead. The expansion draft was held, as a new franchise in the NHL Hockey League was opened with the Atlanta Thrashers and the squad of the team needed to be filled with players.

The rules

The Thrashers could choose from any existing team player. With the exception of the Nashville Predators, who were only a year earlier joined the league. Each of the established teams were allowed a goalkeeper, five defenders and nine attackers or two goalkeepers, three defenders and seven attackers from their squad to lock so that they could not be selected by the Thrashers. The teams who had lost a goalkeeper already in the NHL Expansion Draft 1998 ( Anaheim, Los Angeles, Montreal, New Jersey and the New York Rangers), this time had to leave no goalkeeper.

The Thrashers were able to select a total of 26 players, however, had to be contained therein three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 13 attackers. The remaining two choices could be any position player.

Explanation: T = goalkeeper; V = defenders; C = Centre Forward; LF = Left winger; RF = Right winger.

For reasons of order the players are numbered, but they must not have been selected in that order. The order is not relevant, as the Atlanta Thrashers were the only team in the expansion draft in 1999.

Agreements

In order for the Atlanta Thrashers refrained not select specific players unlocked, they received " compensation " of some teams:

After the Draft

Several players remained after the draft no longer with the team. For this reason Draft transfers with players from the draft were already on the day of the expansion made ​​:

  • Trevor Kidd was transferred for Gord Murphy, Daniel Tjärnqvist, Herberts Vasiljevs and a sixth- round draft pick in the NHL Entry Draft in 1999 after Florida.
  • Peter Ferraro for Randy Robitaille was transferred to Boston.
