1999 Tournament of the Americas

The Torneo de las Américas 1999 ( english The 1999 Tournament of the Americas ) is the ninth edition of the Basketball America Championship and took from 14 to 25 July 1999 in Puerto Rican capital of San Juan instead. The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games 2000. Hindsight, the tournament was inducted into the Order of America Championships and counted as a continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas. Of the ten participating teams, the two finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games. All matches were played at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente.

Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American sub-zone, the four semi-finalists of the Central and South American Championships, which also hosts the Puerto Rico was selected as a finalist of the Centro Basket 1999.

Mode

At the tournament in a preliminary round was held two groups of five teams as a round-robin tournament. The two lowest-ranked teams in the first round and then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams playing off taking with their first round results, a second round as a continuation of the round tournament against the top four teams of the other preliminary round group. The result against the retired team from the first round went out with in the standings, with the same number of victories and defeats, the direct comparison decided. The four semi-finalists were playing in the knock-out system of the medals and thus the automatic qualifying places.

The preliminary round matches took place between the 14th and 18th July 1999.

Second round

The matches of the second round, which determined the four semi-finalists and participants of the final round, took place between 19 and 22 July 1999. The battered results of the preliminary round are indicated in italics.

Final round

The games of the final round took place on 24 and 25 July 1999. The winners of the semi-finals were directly qualified for the Olympics and played in the final for the gold medal.
