The final of denied Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Sampras won in three sets and thus defended his title. This was his sixth triumph at the Wimbledon Championships ( after 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1998), while his twelfth Grand Slam singles title overall, which he set the record of Roy Emerson.
