1st Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 1st Infantry Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht. She was the direct successor of the first division formed on 1 January 1921, the Reichswehr.

  • Eastern front, southern sector: October 1943 to April 1944
  • Eastern front, central section: May 1944 to January 1945
  • East Prussia: May 1945

The 1st Infantry Division (ID) was set up on 1 October 1934, the codename artillery leader I in Königsberg / East Prussia. She wore this designation until 15 October 1935. Infantry regiments were formed from the first ( Prussian ) Infantry Regiment of the 1st Division of the Reichswehr. The 1st ID was mobilized in August 1939 as part of the first wave formation. At the beginning of the Russian campaign, the first ID of the Army Group North was subordinated and fought until August 1942 at Staraya Russa, on the Izhora in Leningrad and the fortified line of Ropsha. In the winter of 1943/44, it was transferred to Army Group South in the Ukraine, where it was used in the area around Vinnitsa. As part of the 1st Panzer Army, they came here in the cauldron of Kamenetz -Podolsk, where they suffered heavy losses. After a refresh, they came from the summer of 1944 at the 3rd Panzer Army at the interface of Army Groups Center and North used.

After heavy losses in the defense of Konigsberg, the Sambia Peninsula and Fischhausen - pillau, the survivors of the 1945 Division were evacuated from Hela to Denmark. When the war ended they were caught in Schleswig- Holstein in British captivity.
