2-chloropropionic acid is a chemical compound from the group of propionic acid derivatives.
Production and representation
2- Chloropropionic can be obtained by chlorination of propionic acid with PCl3, S2Cl2 or chlorosulfonic acid. L- enantiomer is prepared from D -lactic acid and thionyl chloride.
Properties
2- Chloropropionic is a colorless to yellowish, nearly odorless liquid. Above 60 ° C it begins to decompose, hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide produced.
Use
2-chloropropionic acid is used for the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals and herbicides ( phenoxypropionic acid derivatives ).
The reduction of ( S)-2 -chloropropionic acid with lithium aluminum hydride gives (S )-2- chloropropanol, the simplest chlorine alcohol which is further reacted with potassium hydroxide to (R) - methyloxirane.
