2-ethylhexanoic acid is a chemical compound selected from the group of carboxylic acids. Its salts are called 2- ethylhexanoate.

Production and representation

2-ethylhexanoic acid is prepared by oxidation of 2- ethyl -1-hexanol or 2 -ethylhexanal.

Properties

2-ethylhexanoic acid is a very difficult inflammatory, low volatile, colorless to yellowish liquid with a weak characteristic odor. Their aqueous solution is acidic.

Use

2-ethylhexanoic acid is used for the production of heavy metal salts ( so-called octoates ) and for the modification of acrylic resins. It also serves as an intermediate for the preparation of desiccants for varnishes and paints, enamels, catalysts for the oxidation of hydrocarbons, thickening agents for mineral oils and gasoline, wetting agents, emulsifiers, and plasticizers, stabilizers, silicones, corrosion inhibitors, fungicides, 2- Ethylhexenat metal soaps and peroxyesters. The sodium salt of 2-ethylhexanoic acid ( sodium 2- ethyl hexanoate ) is used as a substitute for PCP in the wood industry.

Safety

2-ethylhexanoic acid is classified as toxic to reproduction category 3. The vapors of 2- ethylhexanoic acid can form ( 114 ° C, ignition temperature 310 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
