2000 African Championships in Athletics

The 12th European Athletics Championships Africa held from 12 to 15 August 2000 in the Stade 5 Juillet 1962 in the Algerian capital Algiers instead.

Competitions were held in 22 disciplines for men and 21 for women disciplines. For the 3000 -meter steeplechase of the men there was no such competition for the women. Compared to the previous Africa Cup replaced with the women a 10-km road race, the 5000 - meter track distance while walking, and they were first admitted to the pole vault. In men and women of the 10,000 - meter race was resumed in the program and deleted the 3000 -meter run.

With 411 athletes from 43 countries, a new record for Africa Championship was established. Seven athletes succeeded in Algiers to defend the title in their discipline: Glory Alozie (NGR, 100 - meter hurdles ), Caroline Fournier (MRI, hammer throw ), Hatem Ghoula ( DO, 20 km walking), Abderrahmane Hammad (ALG, high jump ), Andrew Owusu (GHA, triple jump ) Baya Rahouli (ALG, triple jump ) and Redouane Youcef (ALG, decathlon ). The most successful athletes with two gold medals were the Ghanaians Abdul Aziz Zakari and the Cameroonian Myriam Léonie Mani, who both won their races over 100 m and 200 m.
