2000 African Cup of Nations qualification

The qualification for the African Cup of Nations 2000 in Ghana and Nigeria was held in two rounds, a preliminary round KO system and a main round with seven groups of four teams each. Due to a change in the host of the final round one playoff round with three teams for the last free final course was also played.

Participant

A total of 47 teams entered to participate in the African Cup of Nations, which was originally to take place in Zimbabwe. The intended host Zimbabwe and defending champions Egypt were directly qualified for the final round.

Of the remaining 45 teams had eleven bye for the main round, the remaining 34 teams determined in a knockout round with round-trip games, the remaining 17 participants in the main round. The seven group winners and runners-up of the main round should qualify for the finals.

However, the original host Zimbabwe renounced the alignment of the final round. On 15 March 1999 Ghana and Nigeria were determined as a substitute host. Thus both teams were automatically qualified for the finals in 2000. Ghana played at that same time in group 1 and Nigeria in Group 5 qualifying was canceled for both teams, and put their games out of the ranking. For Zimbabwe had 1 and 5 play for a place in the finals, where Senegal prevailed in a playoff round with the group runners now reduced to three teams groups.

Automatically qualify:

  • Egypt Egypt ( defending champion )
  • Ghana Ghana ( co-host )
  • Nigeria Nigeria ( co-host )
