2000 Summer Paralympics

The 11th Summer Paralympics were held until October 29, 2000 in Sydney, Australia on 19 October.

Success of the German team

Bernd Vogel from Bald Wildungen subsequently received the gold medal in weightlifting because Gundus Ismailov was stripped from Azerbaijan for doping the victory in the class up to 90 pounds. For her outstanding achievements in overcoming their disability through sport Willing Martina received (Brandenburg) the " Whang Youn Dai " award, a medal of 75 grams of pure gold. The best athlete was the swimmer Annke Conradi. She won a gold and three silver medals. The swimmer Kay Espenhayn won the most medals with five second places.

The German athletes got 16 gold, 41 silver and 38 bronze medals and 95 medals occupied with the 10th place in the international comparison. Once again, it was found that other countries such as Australia, the UK and Spain are more advanced in the professionalization of the disabled sports as Germany.

Outstanding athletes

Highlights

The first gold medal in wheelchair rugby won the United States, defeated in a thrilling final with Australia 32:31. The U.S. amputee swimmer Jason Wening continued her winning streak (since 1991) over 100 m freestyle continued and won with a world record gold. The Briton Tanni Grey-Thompson won in the four wheelchair race over 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and 800 m gold. Bian Jianxin of China and Fatma Omar of Egypt won the first gold medals in powerlifting for women.

The visually impaired runner Marla Runyan from the U.S. also launched at the Games of the able-bodied, reaching more than 1,500 m, the final, where she finished eighth.
