2001–02 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season
The DEL 2001/02 season was the eighth season of the German Ice Hockey League. The regular season began on 7 September 2001 and ended on March 17, 2002, the play- off round was played on 22 March 2002. German masters were the Cologne Sharks. In addition to the sporting relegated Berlin Capitals mosquitoes food and Revierlöwen Oberhausen also have the license revoked.

Mode and rules
The largest change over the previous year, the re-introduction of the sporty descent. While the top eight teams in the preliminary round for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed played in a play -down round against relegation. For the teams ranked nine to 14, the season had ended after the first round.

The two bottom club Berlin Capitals and the Schwenningen Wild Wings occurred from March 22, 2002 Mode " Best of Seven" against each other:
Thus stood the Berlin Capitals fixed as a sporting relegated, the team was denied at the same time renew the license. Added to this were the Revierlöwen Oberhausen, who could not submit the required proof of venue, as well as the mosquitoes eating, which the license was revoked due to the opening of insolvency proceedings.

Quarterfinals
The quarter-final was played between March 22, 2002. The best-placed team in the main round, the Munich Barons, met the eighth-placed Augsburger Panther, the second-placed Adler Mannheim at the Seventh Polar bears Berlin, the Third, the Krefeld Penguins, on the sixth placed Kölner Haie and the fourth-placed Nuremberg Ice Tigers, as in the previous year to the Kassel Huskies, who had finished fifth again the main round.
Semifinal
The semi-finals were held on April 1st. The highest ranked team in the first round still remaining met the schlechtplatzierteste while the Zweitbestplatzierte the first round hit the Drittbestplatzierten.
Final
The final series was played on the 12th of April. The Adler Mannheim had because of their better placement in the main round of the first home law.
Thus, the Cologne Sharks were the eighth time in their history, and for the second time since the founding of the German DEL champion.
