2001 WNBA season
The 2001 season of the Women's National Basketball Association was played out the fifth season of the North American women's professional basketball league. The regular season began on 28 May 2001 with the opening game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Houston Comets to. After finishing the regular season, which was held until 14 August 2001, which began at the WNBA Playoffs Championship, which the Los Angeles Sparks decided on 1 September in the second final game against the Charlotte Sting for themselves. In addition, in Orlando the third WNBA All-Star Game took place on 16 July 2001 at the TD Waterhouse Centre, home ground of Orlando Miracle, instead.

Draft

The fifth WNBA Draft took place on 20 April 2001 at the NBA Entertainment Studios in Secaucus, New Jersey instead. The selection order of the WNBA Draft was set in a lottery. This won the Seattle Storm against the Charlotte Sting.
In the first position Seattle chose the Australian Lauren Jackson of the Canberra Capitals. In addition, the Utah Starzz decided in the second round (24th Imagined ) for the Czech Michaela Pavlickova from the University of Denver and the New York Liberty in the fourth round (57th place ) for the Finnish Taru Tuukkanen of Xavier University. Overall, sixteen franchises secured the rights to 64 players. The lion's share with 53 players represented the United States.
