2002 African Cup of Nations qualification

Participant

A total of 51 teams entered to participate in the African Cup of Nations 2002 Mali.

Defending champions Cameroon and Mali hosts qualified automatically for the finals. Of the remaining 49 teams had seven a bye for the main round that included seven groups of four teams each. The remaining 42 teams determined in a knockout stage with home and away matches the remaining 21 participants in the main round. The group winners and runners-up of the main round qualified for the African Cup of Nations 2002 Mali.
