2002 European Athletics Championships

The 18th European Athletics Championships were held from August 6 to 11, 2002 in Munich. The competitions were held in the Olympic Stadium of 1972. Both marathons with start at the residence resulted in a three times continuous circular course through the city center ( Odeon Square - Giselastraße - English Garden - Maximilianeum - Prinzregentenstraße - Isar Gate - Viktualienmarkt - Odeon Square ), and finally crossed the finish line in the direction of the Olympic Stadium.

It was attended by 1305 athletes from 47 countries and some 816 officials. Highlights were the new world record of Poland Robert Korzeniowski in the 50 km walk ( 3:36:39 h ) and the European record by Paula Radcliffe in the 10,000 -meter run ( 30:01,09 min).

In summary: A world record, a European record, a junior world record. In addition, there were 23 new EM- bests, 26 national records, 76 personal bests and 15 European Jahresbestleistungen. The national ranking by points, with the best to be considered eight per contest, won Russia (225 points). In second place followed by Germany (186). Third place went to Spain (153).

Date: August 7, Wind: -0.3 m / s The original winner Dwain Chambers ( time: 9.96 s ) was stripped of his gold medal after a decision by the IAAF in 2006 after a doping confession. The following places were advancing one rank and the Portuguese Francis Obikwelu was subsequently awarded the gold medal four years after the competitions.
