2002 Tippeligaen

The Tippeligaen 2002 was the 58th season of Norway's highest football league and the twelfth season under the name Tippeligaen. The season began on 13 April 2002 and ended on 6 November 2002 with the second qualification game.

Mode

The fourteen teams in the league played in a single round-trip round against each other, so that each team completed 26 games. The two last placed athlete had to dismount. The third last had to play in home and away leg against third- placed teams from the first Divisjon to the whereabouts in the Tippeligaen.

Season

Rosenborg BK won for the eleventh consecutive year, the Norwegian championship. It was also the 17th championship for the team.

The season was characterized by two different rounds: the first round was dominated by Lyn Oslo ( Record: 10 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses ). By 14 Matchday they worked out a seven-point lead over the competition. But in the second half the team was only able to win four times and lost so quickly lead to Rosenborg BK, which were in turn a bad start. They had seven points behind after the first round, after 14 Matchday even ten points. But then they won seven games one after the other, while Lyn Oslo reached only eight points. From the 18th Round led Rosenborg BK. But Molde FK played a good season and remained with balanced round-trip round both teams turn. Only in the penultimate round to Rosenborg was able to secure the championship. Molde won second place and qualified as the third-placed Lyn Oslo for the UEFA Cup.

The promoted Vålerenga Oslo won the cup. It was the third overall victory after 1980 and 1997. Among the climbers only Vålerenga Oslo could hold in the Tippeligaen. IK Start on the other hand had to go back to the 1st Divisjon.
