Defending champion was Lleyton Hewitt. The final disputed Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, which won Sampras in four sets. This was his fifth triumph at the U.S. Open (after 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1996 ) and his 14th and last in total Grand Slam titles. He built so that his record further, and in 2009 succeeded Roger Federer to set this and eventually to surpass.
