2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships

The Beach Volleyball World Championship 2003 was held from October 7 to 19 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil ) instead. The competitions for men and women were held one after the other. It was the fourth official World Cup. For women, the U.S. Americans Kerri Walsh and Misty May ended with a final victory against the defending champions Adriana Behar and Bede Shelda the Brazilian dominance at the World Championships. Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson won the first medal for Australia. For men, the local heroes Ricardo and Emanuel won the final against the American duo Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger. The German Volleyball Federation was represented by eight, Austria and Switzerland, each with four teams.

Mode

The tournament was held at the Copacabana. In the women were 47 and for men 48 teams competed. For both tournaments, each with four wild cards were awarded, of which two on the hosts.

In twelve preliminary round groups of four teams played FFA for a place in the main round. For a victory, there were two points for a defeat one point. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third reached the next round. From there on it was in the simple knockout system on to the finals.
