2004 AFC Asian Cup qualification
The qualification for the Asian Cup in China in 2004 was held from March to December 2003. China hosts and defending champions Japan were directly qualified for the final round.

Prequalification
The 20 of the FIFA World Ranking poorly placed most teams started in the pre-qualification, which consisted of 7 groups. The winners of each group were allowed to attend the main qualification.

Main qualification
After the seven winners of the pre-qualification stood firm, they were drawn together with the remaining 21 teams in 7 groups of 4 teams. The first two of each group qualified for the Asia Cup 2004.
