2004 Tour de France, Prologue to Stage 9

The prologue of the 2004 Tour de France was held in Liège, Belgium.

The track had a circumference of 6.1 km and led through the streets of Liege, past the Opera House and along the Meuse. With a time of 6 minutes and 50 seconds the 23 -year-old, German- Swiss Fabian Cancellara from team Fassa Bortolo managed a successful surprise. The five - time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong missed the win by 2 seconds. Third was the Spaniard José Iván Gutiérrez. Best German was Jens Voigt of Team CSC by Bjarne Riis. The direct challenger Lance Armstrong, Jan Ullrich and Tyler Hamilton lost to the Texans 15 or 16 seconds, and found themselves in positions 16 and 18 again. Prolog favorite Bradley McGee, who was an excellent Giro d' Italia down, disappointed with his fourth place.
