2004 World Junior Championships in Athletics

The 10th IAAF World Junior Championships took place from 12 to 18 July 2004 at the Stadio Carlo Zecchini, Grosseto instead. At the same place the Athletics Junior Championships had already been discharged in 2001.

Decisions were made in 44 contests, including 22 each for men and women. For the first time in Athletics Junior World Championships steeplechase for women was included in the program. There were 1429 athletes from 181 countries reported of which 1261 from 168 countries actually competed.

By far the strongest nation of the tournament were the United States with 13 gold medals. In addition, the U.S. sprinter attended on the last day of competition in three of the four relay events for junior world records. Among them was LaShawn Merritt, who in 400 x 100 and the 4 x 400 - meter relay team also triumphed in the 400 - meter dash and so advanced with three gold medals the most successful athletes in the World Cup.
