2004 World Team Table Tennis Championships

The 49th World Table Tennis Championship for teams took place until March 7, 2004 in Doha ( Qatar) from 1. It was played in the Exhibition Centre.

Survey

Both the men's and the women's China won gold. In the men's defending champion China was the German team, which took surprisingly in the final without Jörg Rosskopf, 3-0 win no chance. Throughout the tournament, the gentlemen from China gave only a game, as Werner Schlager won against Ma Lin. In the women, the Chinese team won safely to Hong Kong.

German Men

The German team had in the preliminary round games in Group B victories against Belgium (acting Vice World Champion), Sweden (first WM / EM win against this team for 35 (! ) Years ), Russia, the favorites Taiwan and Hong Kong took first place. Then they had to play as First from Group A against China. This game was lost with 0:3. This China reached the finals. The second finalist was determined by the loser of this game, Germany, had to play against the winner of the encounter between the runners-up. This was South Korea, which had prevailed against Sweden. A 3-1 win over South Korea then meant the finals, where China clearly prevailed 3-0.

German Ladies

The German ladies came a respectable 6th place and failed to qualify so directly for the first division at the 2006 World Cup in Bremen. In the first round they lost to China, South Korea and Singapore and won against Taiwan and Russia. This meant fourth place. In the classification matches to the ranks 5-8, they defeated Hungary and Russia. The subsequent 2:3 defeat against Romania led to 6th place

ITTF decisions

The ITTF Congress (Annual General Meeting) dealt with the following applications of the members:

  • The proposal by Germany and China that the server shall be the ball above the head on impact, was rejected.
  • The Cook Islands and Montenegro was admitted as new members of the ITTF.
  • Serbia and Montenegro muster own teams in the future.
