2005–06 A-League
The 2005/ 06 season the A-League was the first edition of the new top division in football in Australia. After twelve months without a national competition, the first games were played on 26 August 2005. A comprehensive 21 day game League round followed the championship playoffs, where the top four teams playing off the master in the page playoff system.
The first A- League final took place on 5 March 2006. By a 1-0 victory over the Central Coast Mariners Sydney FC the first master of the new league format was. Adelaide United was awarded as the winner of the league round ( A-League Premiership ). Adelaide and Sydney qualified by their successes for the AFC Champions League 2007, took part in the Australian Team for the first time.

Pre-season contests
Before the start of the A-League season, two competitions were held between the participants. In addition to the mandatory since pre-season Cup 2005, a qualifying tournament for participation in the oceanic continental club competition was held.
Qualification World Club Competition
The discharged in May 2005 Qualification World Club Competition was used for determination of the Australian delegate at the Oceania Club Championship 2004/05. The New Zealand A-League representative New Zealand Knights was not allowed to start in this competition. Perth Glory received as reigning national champion received a bye in round 1 competition winners Sydney FC went on to win the continental tournament and qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup 2005. Due to the Club World Cup Participation Sydney A- League was established in December for subjected to three weeks.

Pre -Season Challenge Cup
The Pre -Season Challenge Cup 2005 took place as a leading high season in July and August. The eight A- League teams were initially à into two preliminary round groups of four teams split up and played in a simple league round. The two group winners of each group advanced in the semi-finals and played the winner of the knockout process.
First title winners were the Central Coast Mariners a 1-0 victory over Perth Glory.
