(2005) Hencke is one of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered from the observatory room forest of the University of Berne on September 2, 1973 by Swiss astronomer Paul Wild.

The asteroid is named after the German amateur astronomer Karl Ludwig Hencke (1793-1866) named (not to be confused with Johann Franz Encke ( 1791-1865 ), as director of the Berlin Observatory ).
