2005 Jilin chemical plant explosions

The chemistry of Jilin accident has been caused by a series of explosions on 13 November 2005 at petrochemicals operation No.101, the Company, Jilin Petroleum and Chemical Company ( subsidiary of PetroChina ), in Jilin, China. Five workers died as a result of explosions in the chemical plant, dozens were injured and several thousand residents in Jilin City had to be evacuated.

Here also the Songhua River was heavily contaminated with benzene and nitrobenzene. According to official information about 100 tons of benzene were discharged into the river and a 80 km long toxic slick of on the river.

On November 21, the drinking water in the Chinese city of Harbin was turned off, as this is directly related from the Songhua Jiang. First, the shutdown of the water network was explained by maintenance. However, the City Council announced on the same day a statement from that attributed the shutdown due to the contamination of the Songhua Jiang. On 24 November, the poison rug reached the city of Harbin. The city council had the prices for drinking water in shops set on the state on November 20, in order to avoid a price increase.

In mid-December 2005, Russia was reached by the poison carpet that moved in the impact on the city of Khabarovsk.
