2005 NHL Entry Draft

The NHL Entry Draft 2005 took place on 30 July 2005 at The Westinn Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. The 30 NHL teams had out on the opportunity to secure the rights to the most promising talents. Each team was allowed to select one player per round, if the team had not given the right to vote in a transfer.

Initial situation

The 2004/05 season was canceled because of the lockout. The actual date for the draft was 25 June, but since the NHL and the players had not yet agreed, the draft was canceled at that time. On July 30, the draft was not, as normally occurs in a large hall filled with spectators instead, but on a small scale in a hotel in Ottawa. The rented for 25 June multifunctional arena in Ottawa would have been available for the second date, but on such a short time, the event on a large scale can not be organized.

Since normally the final table of the NHL and the performance of the qualified for the play offs teams is the basis of the draft order, was to decide on a special lottery, the order this time. In a saucepan, a total of 48 balls with the names of the teams, where there were four teams with three balls, ten teams with two balls and the remaining teams, each with a ball. The arrangement was that each team has to start three balls. Winners of the lottery were the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were drawn first. While in the second round of the draft this continues after a normal season, that maintains the order of the first round, this time the second round started in reverse order. So the Pittsburgh Penguins were allowed to select the first player, but were then only turn again, was selected as player number 60 and thus the last of the second round.

In the rankings of NHL scouts was led to number one in North America Sidney Crosby, who was then selected as the first player in the Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
