In the final, met in 2000 as successive Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams walked as in 2000 as the winner from the square. However, they could only prevail 9-7 in the third set against Davenport. It was 2h 46 min, the longest final in the women's singles in Wimbledon history. For Williams, it was the third from five Wimbledon singles titles. For Davenport, it was after her Wimbledon victory in 1999 and their final defeat in 2000, the third Wimbledon final.
