2005 World Women's Handball Championship

The 17th World Handball Championship for Women was held on 5 December to 18 December 2005, Saint Petersburg, Russia. A total of 24 teams were initially divided into four groups in a preliminary round against each other. Then the main round followed with six teams into two groups. This was followed by qualifying matches for the semi-finals and finals and placement matches for positions 3 to 8 World Cup 2005, Russia was for a 28:23 victory in the final against Romania.

Preliminary round

The first three teams in each group qualified for the main round. In the case of a point tie, the direct comparison between these teams was the first decision criterion for table formation.

Main Round

The main round was first played in two groups. In group 1, each played the first three teams in the preliminary round group A and B, in group 2, respectively, the first three teams in the preliminary round groups C and D. These were the results of the teams who've been hit on each other in the first round over.

The first two teams from Group 1 and 2 contested the semi-finals, the third-placed teams played the number 5 and the four placed teams from the 7th place.
