2006–07 Mestis season

The 2006/07 season was the seventh season in Mestis, the second highest Finnish ice hockey league. For the first time Hokki Kajaani won the Mestis championship.

Regular Season

Mode

Each team had to play four times against every other team in the league and once against the Finnish U20 national team of men. Each game consisted of three thirds of 20 minutes playing time. If it is after regular time have stood undecided, an extension of five minutes, was played. The first goal in extra time decided the game for the team that scored the goal. In the event that no winner after extra time was still found, the game was considered a draw.

A victory in the regular season and after extra time brought a team two points. A draw and a defeat after extra time was rewarded with a point. For a defeat in the regular season, there were no points.

Play-offs

Mode

Places 1-8 were qualified for the play- offs. For the semi-finals, the teams that had won in the quarterfinals against their opponents by five games, the most qualified. In the semi final was played also by the mode best-of- 5. The winners of those ties made ​​it to the finals, while the losers in the small final played for third place. In the final five games were played again. Who won the most games, was the winner of the season. In the round for 3rd place, only one game was played.

The respective opponents were put together so that the highest placed team plays against the worst, the second best, second-worst against, and so on. A game lasted, as in the high season, a total of 60 minutes. After the regular time extensions were of 20 minutes duration was played until a winner is found by a decisive goal.

Play -downs

Mode

The four lowest ranked teams after the regular season and the losers of the quarter- finals of the play-offs had to play to avoid relegation in the play- downs. The losers of the first round had in the second round. The losers of the second round had a qualifying round against the two best teams in the Suomi- sarja, the third highest Finnish ice hockey league for remaining in the Mestis, survive. The time length of the Play -downs corresponds to that in the play-offs.

The losers of the play- downs from the Mestis and the winners of the play-offs from the Suomi- sarja occurred in a qualification round in order to remain in the Mestis or to move up against each other. FPS and Koo -Vee alighted at the Suomi- sarja. Kotkan Titaanit and Lempäälän Kisa went up into the Mestis.

SM- liiga - qualification

In spring 2007, a team from the Mestis had the opportunity to advance in the SM- liiga and to form the 15th team in the highest league. This opportunity Mikkelin Jukurit was taken because this club is the most successful team of the Mestis Season 2006/07 was the second place that had applied for a promotion ( Kajaanin Hokki had not advertised ).

To qualify, Jukurit had a best- of-seven - round against last placed SM liiga, KalPa Kuopio, survive.

Jukurit lost the qualifying round against KalPa and therefore remained in the Mestis.
