2006 Copa Sudamericana

The Copa Sudamericana in 2006 was the 5th playout this second most important South American football competition for club teams, which has acted under the name " Copa Nissan Sudamericana " due to the sponsorship of the car manufacturer Nissan. In this fifth season was attended by a total of 34 teams including defending champions Boca Juniors CA, including 31 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL and for the first time 3 teams from the CONCACAF region. These were CF Pachuca and Toluca from Mexico and LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica. The competition was as had been played in the second half. It began on 22 August 2006 with the elimination rounds and ended on 13 December 2006 with the final return match in Santiago de Chile. The title was won by the Mexican club CF Pachuca.

Mode

Compared to the previous year were no changes to the Format. For the second round is qualified as before the respective winners of the regional qualifying rounds. Another six teams were directly qualified for the knockout stages. These were three teams from Argentina and the three teams from the CONCACAF region. From the knockout stages as was previously played in pure knockout system with return game. With point- and Torgleichheit was the away goals rule. Was also the number of away goals scored equal, followed subsequent to the return game immediately followed by a penalty shootout. This rule also applied to the final.

Excretion Argentina

The first legs took place on 12 and 20, 2006 on 22 and 30 August, the return games.

Argentina's representative for the knockout stages were thus CA San Lorenzo de Almagro and Lanus.

Excretion Brazil

The first legs were held on 13 and 14 August 2006 on 6 and 7, the return games.

Brazil's representative for the knockout stages were thus Corinthians São Paulo, Santos, Atlético Paranaense and Fluminense FC.

Excretion Chile / Peru

First round

The first legs took place on 31 August 2006 on the 24th, the return games.

2nd round

The first leg was held on 12, instead of the return match on 19 September 2006.

For the last sixteen to CSD Colo -Colo Santiago qualified from Chile.

Excretion Bolivia / Ecuador

First round

The first legs were held on 30 and 31 August in 2006 at 22 and 24, the return games.

2nd round

The first leg was held on 12, instead of the return match on 21 September 2006.

For the Achtetelfinale to CD El Nacional Quito qualified from Ecuador.

Excretion Paraguay / Uruguay

First round

The first legs took place on 29 August 2006 at 23, the return games.

2nd round

The first leg took place on the 5th, instead of the return match on September 9, 2006.

For the second round, the Nacional Montevideo of Uruguay qualified.

Excretion Colombia / Venezuela

First round

The first legs took place on 30 and 29 August in 2006 at 22 and 23, the return games.

2nd round

The first leg took place on the 5th, instead of the return match on 21 September 2006.

For the last sixteen qualified Deportes Tolima in Colombia.

Second round

Participants were the ten winners of the regional competitions and the following six teams that have qualified automatically by a bye: Argentina CA Boca Juniors ( defending champion ) Argentina CA River Plate Argentina Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata Mexico Toluca Mexico Pachuca Costa Rica LD Alajuelense

The first legs took place from September 26 to October 4, the return matches from 10 to 12 October 2006.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on 31, 25 and 26 October and on 1 November 2006, on 18, 19 and 25 October, the return games.

* First leg broken in the 86th minute with the score at 4-1, as a player of Gimnasia y Esgrima was hit by an object.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 22 and 21 November in 2006 at 15 and 16, the return games.
