2006 European Men's Handball Championship
The 7th European Handball Championship for men was held from 26 January to 5 February 2006 in Switzerland. European champion was the first time France, defending champion Germany only reached fifth place. Hosts Switzerland already retired from after the preliminary round, the Austrian national team could not qualify for the European Championship.
Was accompanied Handball major event of 500 athletes and officials of, 600 journalists and about 185,000 spectators.

Preliminary round
The first three of each group reached the main round.
Group A
The group A played in the Kreuzbleiche, St. Gallen.
Group B
The Group B played at St. Jakob Halle, Basel.
Group C
The group C played in the town hall in Lucerne Sursee / Lucerne.
Group D
The group D played in the Wankdorf hall, Berne.
Main Round
The main round matches found in the Kreuzbleiche, St. Gallen, and the St. Jakob Halle, Basel, instead. From the 12 teams from the preliminary round, two groups were formed. In group I played the first three of the groups A and B, in group II, the first three of the groups C and D. The points were taken from the first round that has been made against the other teams who had also reached the main round. The first and second position in their group were advancing to the semifinals, the third played the direct qualification for the European Handball Championship 2008 in Norway.
Group I
The games in Group I were held at the St. Jakob Halle in Basel.
Group II
The games in Group II were fought in the cross- bleaching Hall in St. Gallen.
Final round
In the final round, all games were held in the largest hall, the Hallenstadion Zurich discharged.

Thus Germany has qualified directly for the European Handball Championship 2008 in Norway.
