2006 FIBA World Championship for Women

The Basketball Women's World Cup 2006 was held from September 12 to September 23, 2006 in Brazil instead. On the Enter the Games in São Paulo ( Ibirapuera ) and Barueri were (about 30 kilometers away from Sao Paulo). The tournament was organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA ) and the Confederação Brasileira de Basketball, the Brazilian Federation.

Except for Brazil, which has automatically qualified as the host country, and the United States, who were qualified as reigning Olympic champion, the remaining 14 participants were determined by continental qualifying tournaments:

  • FIBA Americas: Brazil, United States (Olympic Champion), Canada, Argentina, Cuba
  • FIBA Africa: Nigeria, Senegal
  • FIBA Asia: China, Taiwan, South Korea
  • FIBA Oceania: Australia ( Oceania champions )

*) The match Australia against Lithuania had to be canceled and was rated 2-0 for Australia because of a flight cancellation forced the Lithuanians to travel across French Guiana, to reach Brazil.   • Penny Taylor of the gold medalist Australia ( most valuable player ) was elected MVP of the tournament. In the gold medal game against Russia, she scored 28 points and 9 rebounds. On average, Taylor scored 18.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game and had hit rates of 59.3 percent from the field (51 of 86 ), 40.0 percent from three- point line ( 12 of 30 ) and 85.7 percent in free throws (30 of 35). Her teammate Lauren Jackson was number 2 in the election. The Russian Maria Stepanova was third.
