2006 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships

The 35th Canoe Sprint World Championships were held from 17th to 20th August, 2006 the Hungarian city of Szeged instead. The World Championships were organized by the International Canoe Federation (ICF). Szeged was after 1998 for the second time hosted the Canoe Sprint World Championships.

A total of 27 competitions were held in the disciplines of canoe and kayak, with 18 for men and 9 for women only, because in them only kayak competitions were held. The distances of the races were 200 m, 500 m and 1000 m.

Venue was a 2400 m long and 122 m wide artificial regatta course in the West Szeged.

Highlights

The host country Hungary won 12 of the 27 gold medals. Germany and Russia each won four gold medals.

The Europeans were shocked by the victory of the Mexican Everardo Cristóbal in the C-1 1000m final. This victory earned Mexico a the first gold medal.
