2006 NHL Entry Draft

The 44th NHL Entry Draft was held on 24 June 2006 at General Motors Place in Vancouver, Canada. The 30 NHL teams had out on the opportunity to secure the rights to the most promising talents. Each team was allowed to select one player per round, if the team had not given the right to vote in a transfer.

Draft order

The Draft Lottery on 20 April 2006 resulted in the following order for the positions 1-14 of the Entry Drafts, the results of the playoffs were decisive for positions 15-30. If a draft pick was acquired through a transfer, in brackets the original owner of the draft picks. This distribution applies only to the first round of the Entry Draft.

Draft result

Erik Johnson was selected first, as expected in the entry draft and is one of the NHL system at the St. Louis Blues. He is in the history of the draft only the fifth U.S. citizen, who was pulled in the first place. First European player in fourth position was Nicklas Backstrom from Sweden. Ranks # 14 was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks Michael Grabner of Austria.

During the draft, Minnesota's first draft pick Trevor Lewis was transferred to an exchange transaction to the Los Angeles Kings (17th place).

Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins were the only players from the first round, which were already used in the 2006/07 season in the NHL.

The NHL has compiled rankings of the most promising talents. It was assumed that the lying in the rankings on the front seats talents will be drafted first. The products listed in the Scout lists player Marcel Müller, Moritz Müller, Elia Ostwald, Christoph Gawlik and Torsten Ankert were not pulled.

Austrian talent

  • Michael Grabner ( born October 5, 1987 in Villach) was ranked 15 in North America ranking.
  • Andreas Nödl (born 28 February 1987 in Vienna) was ranked 60 in North America ranking.

Swiss talents

  • Reto Berra (born 3 January 1987), drawn from the St. Louis Blues in round 4 ( 106 overall).
  • Julian Walker (born 10 September 1986), drawn from the Minnesota Wild in round 6 ( 162 total).
  • Michael Dupont (born 20 December 1987), drawn by the Philadelphia Flyers in Round 6 ( 175th overall).
