2006 Super 14 season

The 2006 season was the first issue of Super 14 rugby union competition with 14 franchise teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Launched in 1996, Super 12 competition was expanded by two teams, Western Force from Perth ( Australia) and Central Cheetahs from Bloemfontein ( South Africa).

The season began on 10 February 2006 and ended with the final on 27 May 2006. A total of 94 matches were played, each team round-robin against the 13 other teams fought out. It was followed by two semi-finals and eventually the finals. Masters were the sixth time the Crusaders from the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

  • 4 points for a win
  • 2 points for a draw
  • 0 points for a loss (before possible bonus points )
  • 1 bonus point for four or more successful attempts, regardless of the Final
  • 1 bonus point for a loss by fewer than seven points difference
