The 96th Australian Open took place on January 27, 2008 in Melbourne, Australia on 14.
Defender of the single were Roger Federer in the men's and Serena Williams in the women. In men's doubles, the twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan, in women's doubles Cara Black and Liezel Huber were the defending champions. Daniel Nestor and Elena Lichowzewa were the defending champions in the mixed doubles.
After 20 years, the Australian Open was first held no longer on Rebound Ace, but on Plexicushion, a thinner and slightly faster surface.
Of the top 100 male tennis players all were registered for the tournament, and the top 100 women were missing only Samantha Stosur and Vera Dushevina, so that the 96th edition of the Australian Open was very strongly held.
In the men's singles Novak Djokovic was able to win his first Grand Slam title. In the women's singles Maria Sharapova won. The men's doubles was Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram win, and in women's doubles won Alyona Bondarenko and Kateryna Bondarenko. In Mixed Sun Tiantian and Nenad Zimonjic won.

The title in the juniors won the Australian Bernard Tomic, who was able to prevail in the final in three sets 4:6, 7:6 (5) and 6-0 against the No. 10 -seeded Yang Tsung- Hua (Taiwan). Tomic had already in the quarterfinals of the top seeds Mexicans César Ramírez conquered.
Single junior
In the juniors, the Dutch Arantxa Rus prevailed. In the final she won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 against the Australian Jessica Moore.
