2008 FIFA Club World Cup

The FIFA Club World Cup 2008 ( engl.: FIFA Club World Cup 2008 ) was the fifth edition of this international football competition for club teams and was held from December 11 to 21 for the fourth time in a row in Japan. With Manchester United for the second time a European team won the title.

Mode

Compared to last year there was no change to the Format. The tournament was played with seven participants. In addition to the six winners of the continental champion competitions at club level from Asia, Africa, CONCACAF, South America, Europe and Oceania and the finalists of the AFC CL Adelaide United, who had to contest a playoff game against the winner of the OFC CL, as with Gamba Osaka a Japanese team won the AFC CL and thus the qualification of an association from the host country on its national championship was omitted. The winner of the elimination played with African, Asian and CONCACAF representatives of two participants from the semi-finals. For this, the teams from Europe and South America were as previously set and played only two games each. It was played as usual in the knockout system. In eleven days the first time took place in eight games since the game has been played for fifth place again.

"adidas " Golden Ball

The "Golden Ball" for the best player of the tournament went to England's Wayne Rooney of Manchester United. The "Silver Ball" went to his teammate with the Red Devils, the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, and the " Bronze Ball" at the Argentinean Alejandro Manso of Liga de Quito.

FIFA Fair Play Trophy

The Fair Play Award for athletic correct occurrence both on and off the lawn received the Australian club Adelaide United.
